The big news around my interwebs today is that the Game of Thrones show runners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have finally confirmed that the show will finish up long before the last books are out, and as a result, spoilers will be had by everyone.

Read the Vanity Fair article “Game of Thrones Creators Confirm the Show Will Spoil the Books”.

All things considered, fans of the show and of the books knew that this was going to be the likely conclusion to this scenario. Seeing as how it takes R.R. Martin years, (years!) to finish each book, there was no way he was going to have enough time to finish each of the books before each future TV season started.

That said, I don’t think this will be a deal-breaker for the book-lovers. We should all keep in mind a few things:

  1. Many things on the show happen differently than they do in the books, so just because we know what’s coming up in the books, doesn’t necessarily mean they will happen this way on the show.
  2. Yes, the show and the books will have essentially the same main conclusion, but this doesn’t mean that the show runners can’t or won’t blow our minds with things that they come up with themselves, they’ve done that before with the White Walkers and Bran.
  3. Just because the show will now be all spoilery for the books, doesn’t mean Martin won’t fill his book up with things that his imagination comes up with that have nothing to do with whatever happens in the show. We all know how twisted his mind can get sometimes (ok, yeah, all the time!). I wouldn’t put it past him to change things up when he gets around to finishing his book series long after the show has wrapped up.

In the end, I like to think of the show and the books as being two separate entities (much like The Walking Dead show and the comic books*), I watch them and enjoy them as two separate things, and find much joy in the changes and differences as they come along. The differences are what make the watching and the reading both so interesting!

Will I watch the show to the end? You bet!

Will I still buy and read the remaining books? Of course!

I look forward to both!

What do you think of the show finishing up the story before all of the books have been written?

*see how I can almost always bring things back ’round to zombies 🙂
